General Information about Owensboro Kentucky
Owensboro, named after Colonel Abraham Owen, it is the third largest city in Kentucky. Owensboro is located in Daviess County. The city had a total population of 55,525 in 2006. Owensboro was first settled by frontiersman William "Bill" Smeathers in 1790s for which the park on the riverfront is named. The settlement was known as Yellow Banks. Yellow Banks was incorporated as a city in 1817 under the name Owensborough, named after Colonel Abraham Owen. The name was shortened in 1893 to its present spelling of Owensboro.
Frederick Ames who came to Owensboro from Washington, Pennsylvania in 1887 started the Carriage Woodstock Company. The company was designed to repair horse-drawn carriages. Ames began to manufacture a line of automobiles in 1910 under the Ames brand name. In 1912 Ames hired industrialist Vincent Benxi and the company soon became the Ames Motor Car Company. Production ceased in 1915, despite being called the "best $1500" car by a Texas car dealer. The company then began manufacturing replacement bodies for the Ford Model T. By 1922, the company then began to manufacturing furniture under the name Ames Corporation. By 1970 the Ames Company sold out to Whitehall Furniture.
Owensboro considers itself the "BBQ Capital of the world". It host its International BBQ festival and competition every second weekend in May. During the summer downtown Owensboro offers "Friday after 5"this is a 16-week series of free outdoor concerts on the downtown riverfront. The festival includes live bands, events for the whole family, and additional entertainment. The festival begins every Friday from 5:00 pm till 10:00 pm. There is an estimated 35,000 people that attends the festival.
Owensboro is also home to the Annual Owensboro Pumpkin Festival held each September. The festival consists of food vendors, crafts people, carnival rides, children and adult activities and games, and plenty of pumpkin contests. The festival hosts a weekend long concert series. The event was started by the Glen Mary Sisters in Owensboro as a way to raise awareness and funds for their mission work in the southeastern United States
