James Wilkinson purchased a 260-acre tract of land on the north side of the Kentucky River in 1786. Today this land is known as downtown Frankfort. The name of Frankfort is thought to be named after Stephen Frank. Frank was a pioneer from Bryan`s Station who was making salt at a ford in the Kentucky River when he was killed by a group of Indians who attacked the group of pioneers. This event took place in the 1780s, after the death of Frank the crossing was called "Frank`s Ford". Later the name was shortened to Frankfort.
After Kentucky became a state, five commissioners were appointed in 1792, to choose a location for the state capital. A number of communities competed for the honor of being the capital city of Kentucky, but Frankfort won by perseverance.
